SPRING SPRUNG AT WINTERBOURNE
A NEW YEAR and a new season roared into life for the Hants and Dorset
Youth Moto-Cross Club at Winterbourne Stickland on March 3 with an entry
nudging 175 – most of them, it seemed, in the novice group.
Upgradings from last year’s senior and novice ranks swelled the Expert
Plus line up but it was comparative old hands Mike Walbrin and Pete
Broomfield, renewing an on-track rivalry from their own schoolboy days,
who held sway at the top of the pecking order.
Just two points separated the top three in the fast and furious novice
group where it took a tie break to give newcomer Leigh Adlem the overall
verdict ahead of Adam Taylor with first race winner Stephen Bain third
ahead of Richard Wareham on his venerable twin shock.
Tommy Hendry had no such trouble in the senior group reeling off three
straight gate to post wins while Michael Bailey consolidated his
reputation by claiming the runner-up spot ahead of visitor Ben Bowers.
It was a similar story in the Inter Open category where Adam Quincey led
home Chris Bennett each time out with Russ Copsey bagging a hat trick of
thirds.
Voted most improved rider of last season, Thomas Speer lived up to the
title by taking top honours in the Inter 85s but the form of
newly-elevated Jake Thompson, Sam Nicholls and Carl Miles who filled the
rest of the leaderboard should keep the second year jockeys on their toes.
The vacant positions at the front of the Junior pack following the
departure of last season’s front runners were ably filled by a posse of
young guns headed by Lewis Trickett Dean Cummings and Ben Weedon although
Kyle Newman, Jody Samways and Stephen Bain were never far behind.
Fast-gating by Harry Hanson helped him on his way to an unchallenged
maximum in the autos group with Lee Wren and Jessie Arnold respectively
second and third each time out.

Trigon 31st March
The sun certainly did not shine on the Hants &
Dorset riders for their Easter Sunday race meeting at Trigon, Wareham.
Rain, overnight and during some of the first block provided an even more
challenging track which thankfully dried out as the day progressed. Young
and older riders took several tumbles providing the medics and the ever
athletic parents and track marshals plenty of work.
The first group to race were the Expert Plus, twenty four riders began the
day with only seventeen completing all three races. Lee Lucas took the
chequered flag twice after some hard battling with Ben Milward and Jon
Courage to take first overall after Ben was victorious in their second
outing.
The Novices were next on the line, with Chris
Gunter winning the first two races and Paul Haywood coming up to win from
the rear in the last race. With points tallied, Chris took first overall ,
Leigh Adlam second and Adam Taylor third.
The next group to tackle the course were the Seniors. Here the wins were
shared by Tommy Henry and James Bartholomew giving overall positions of
Tommy, Joe Clark and James third.
After these all 125cc confrontations it was the turn of the Autos on a
drying track. Magnus Manson-Chubb won the first with Harry Hinson winning
the next two.
After cutting some of the track for the Autos,
the Juniors took their chance on the whole course. Lewis Trickett and Dean
Cummings battled for firsts with some excellent racing. Lewis had two wins
with Dean on his back mudguard with the positions reversed in their other
outing.
In the Inter 85s Michael Kent, in a class of his own, took the first race
win, however subsequently Ross Hill upped his pace and gave him a run for
his money in the next two races.
The only rider to accumulate maximum points with three race wins was Kurt
Freegard in the Inter 100s although Ross Copsey and Dean Clark were not
far behind.

FULL BORE AT MILBORNE
FLAT out and full bore was the only way
to ride the largely flat, fast and sweeping track at Milborne St Andrew
when Hants and Dorset YMC staged its fourth championship meeting of the
year on April 14th.
Drought conditions which made the ground rock hard and dusty added extra
edge to the off camber corners as tyres clawed vainly for grip on the
unyielding surface which brought the throttle-happy down to earth with a
painful bump.
For the most part visitors rose to the challenge better than their Hants
and Dorset hosts with several home club top dogs destined to eat the dust
dished up by their roving rivals.
Dean Woodford reeled off a hat trick maximum over Ben Milward in the
expert plus with Mike Walbrin, Pete Broomfield and Matt Welch taking it in
turns to follow the leading pair over the finish line.
Regular visitor Ben Bowers once more topped the senior ratings, but only
after a last race misfortune befell home hero Tommy Henry, allowing
Michael Bailey and Ricky Fenton to fill the podium.
Jack Taylor made a clean sweep through the Inter 85 card with Ryan Gower
returning to the H & D fold to make runner up ahead of another new member
Ryan Allen while last year’s junior champion Ashley Bailey made his
long-promised impact on the bigger capacity crowd.
Lewis Trickett and Ben Weedon battled gamely to uphold Hants and Dorset
honour in the juniors but had no answer to visitors Alex Hussey and Ross
Keyworth.
Kieron Maidment made mincemeat of the autos class to pick up three firsts
with Lee Wren pouncing on a rare slip by Harry Hanson to grab runner up
slot.
A first race fall stopped Ross Copsey gaining a hat trick in the Inter
Open class where Marcus Feltham with a trio of hard-charging second places
shaded more fancied runners Joe Clark and first race winner Daniel Lynn.
Epic duels between Chris Bunter and Neil Farmer characterised the opening
encounters among the full house in the novice group but the latter’s third
race DNF allowed heat winner Paul Haywood and ever-steady Adam Taylor to
complete the podium behind Chris.

ROUGH AND TUMBLES AT
REMPSTONE
OVERNIGHT rain topped up by showers during the day turned sections of the
Rempstone, near Corfe Castle, track into a malevolent morass which claimed
countless victims when Hants and Dorset YMC ran its championship meeting
on April 28.
From expert plus hot shots to the most junior of jockeys, few escaped the
cloying clutches of the unique terrain that mixes the worst of mud and
sand to create sticky traps for the unwary.
Hardest hit was the Inter 85 group where the carnage in the second heat
laid low such luminaries as Thomas Speer, Ryan Gower and Ashley Bailey and
forced the abandonment of the race. A win in the depleted third leg sealed
the overall for Michael Kent ahead of Ryan Allen and Tony Cook.
Evergreen Terry House on his return to the Hants and Dorset fray was made
to work for the expert plus laurels, coming from behind to take the first
encounter from Ben Milward after front runner Phil Lewis came unstuck and
then following Jason Palmer and Phil over the line in the other heats.
In a sparsely-populated senior group, honours went to visitor Ricky Fenton
after homegrown hope Michael Bailey succumbed to the Rempstone rigours in
the deciding third race leaving Tommy Henry to take overall runner-up
spot.
Lewis Trickett posted two wins to top the Juniors whose mini machines were
almost swallowed whole by the holes which rapidly developed under their
wheels.
Although spared some of the worst trouble spots, the Autos had their own
hill to climb with the conditions but nothing could stop Kieron Maidment
bagging one of only two hat trick maximums scores.
The other full house came at the opposite end of the age scale where Adam
Taylor made light of the going to see off the challenge of Leigh Adlem and
Richard Wareham for once forsaking his trusty twin shock.
By contrast there were three different race winners in the Inter 100s but
overall winner Ross Copsey wasn't one them - his trio of seconds enough to
outpoint the less consistent Daniel Lynn, Marcus Feltham and Dean Clark.

JUMPING JACKS AT BISHOPSTONE
VISITORS, new members and other
interlopers kept one jump ahead of the home club faithful when Hants and
Dorset YMC opened its doors to allcomers at Bishopstone on May 12.
With more artificial
mounds than a silicone supermodel the poseurs playground of a track drew
glittering line ups in every group to eclipse the local stars.
Only the autos had their
somewhat shortened version of the track to themselves and Keiron Maidment
revelled in the conditions to reel off three wins while Lee Wren and
Harry Hinson squabbled in his wake.
After making the pace in
the Seniors as a visitor so far this season, Ben Bowers waved the flag
for Hants and Dorset en route to three straight wins while Matt Carter
showed his relish for the aerial antics by taking overall runner-up spot
ahead of Joe Clark.
Jeff Perrett returned to
the club where he made his name to take Expert Plus honours at the
expense of Paul Cowshall whose extravagant leaps also led to a couple of
falls and prodigal Simon Wakely completed the leaderboard.
Visitors ran riot in the
Intermediate groups but ex-pat H & D member Ross Hill secured the 85cc
laurels with Michael Kent a fighting third overall and a heat win to his
credit.
Aliens ruled the roost
among the 100s with fourth placed Kurt Freeguard the only familiar name
to appear in the results although some may remember Craig Rogers and
Kristian Whatley’s parentage will mean something to the older generation.
Mitchell Chalmers battled
gamely to uphold Hants and Dorset honour in the junior ranks also heavily
infiltrated by outsiders who carried off the majority of the day’s
spoils.

RAIN REIGNS AT BERE REGIS
THE weather gods that cursed the last meeting
at this venue were in spiteful mood again on June 2 when an unseasonal
deluge turned a damp and dismal day into muddy mayhem – and then the sun
shone.
A hillside track that was surprisingly dry when walked before practice was
turned into a morass as drizzle turned into incessant driving rain and the
only thing that was not clogged by the cloying clag was the clock which
ticked round at alarming pace as the first – and only scorable block of
races made its painful progress.
By the mid-afternoon lunchtime the racing had descended into virtual farce
but all but the best and bravest of the younger riders and the lapscorers
had no chance of deciphering obliterated numbers through the downpour.
Then, the damage done and the meeting reduced to a single straight race
for each group, the rain stopped, the sun shone, the track dried and the
youngsters who had had the worst of the conditions earlier could revel in
the afternoon’s fun block.
But for the most of the grown ups there was no point and very little fun
to be had in struggling around the slippery surface collecting bucket
loads of the Bere Regis ready mix concrete formula of lime, gravel and
clay.
Results, such as they were, spoke for themselves with the expert and
experienced more often profiting at the expense of the fast and furious
who rapidly became less of the first and more of the latter with every
slip and slide along the way.

MIDSUMMER
BIKES SCREAM AT SHERBORNE
A FAST and flat track at North Wootton on the
outskirts of Sherborne provided several spills but few thrills among
another huge entry for Hants and Dorset’s 9th championship meeting of the
season on June 23rd.
But 24 hours after Midsummer Day the sun finally shone on the Club and its
riders who enjoyed a welcome respite from the cold and wet that bedevilled
its previous outings.
Early and hard on the gas and late and hard on the brakes was the
technique for success on the series of straights and corners that made up
the course but a lush grass surface, peppered with cow pats, caught out
those who overdid the heavy acceleration or braking, especially in the
morning session.
And those who came to Earth did so with a painful bump, necessitating
paramedic attention not least for Vince Dodd whose sterling efforts aboard
his son’s 100cc Kawasaki ended with a broken leg.
The flat and flat out nature of the track made a clean start essential and
Tim Chard was the quickest off the blocks in the Expert Plus with a maiden
race win before succumbing to visitor Paul Ayres and former club hunk
Wayne Noble.
Peter Wright and Michael Bailey locked horns each time out in the Seniors
with James Bartholomew third each time out.
A hat trick for Lee Wren nudged Keiron Maidment off his customary top
perch in the Autos, where the strict pecking order extended over the first
four places each time out.
Lewis Trickett bagged the opening Junior encounter before Mitchell
Chalmers restored normal service to take the overall and Dean Cummings
pushed his KTM further up the finishing order each time to claim the third
podium place.
Thomas Speer racked up a high speed hat trick in the Inter 85s with Ryan
Gower and Liam Perry in hot pursuit.
Jamie Anstis spoiled the perfect record of visitor Matthew Jones in the
Inter Open class, but couldn’t prevent the interloper loping off with the
overall laurels.
A hairy first race start left Adam Taylor in
the Novices with too much to do to catch Mark Bridgewater, but he made no
such slip in the other heats to secure the overall in a group whose
competitiveness increasingly belies the age and status of the combatants.

MILBORNE MELEES
A STEEP learning curve provided an object
lesson for the over exuberant when Hants and Dorset YMC pitched camp on a
hillside track at Milborne St Andrew for its 9th championship meeting of
the season on July 7th.
Green grass, damp in the air and off cambers on every corner caught out
the inexpert and incautious and even when the herbage was scrubbed off the
loose stuff underneath quickly dug out into rugged ruts and loose berms.
Conditions on the uphill first corner resulted in frequent first lap
melees, especially in the intermediate groups where the pack was shuffled
to produce some unpredictable results, not least in the Inter Open where
once again visitors, including fast lady Gemma Huntley, stole the show.
Likewise in the Inter 85s home hero Thomas Speer had no answer to
interloper Lewis Palmer while inconsistencies and spills among the chasing
pack relegated regular front runners behind their more durable rivals Ryan
Allen, Ashley Bailey and never-say-die Tony Cook.
In a rerun of the previous meeting Lewis Trickett drew first blood in the
Juniors with overall winner Mitchell Chalmers upping the pace in the other
heats to claim mastery of the group.
Lee Wren was the high flyer in the autos reeling off three straight wins
while Oliver Jones ruffled the feathers of Kieron Maidment and Harry
Hinson in their scrap for podium perches.
In a depleted Senior field Joe Clark, visitor Nicky Huntley and Michael
Bailey took the race wins with the last named securing the overall
victory.
Phil Lewis and Ben Milward played high speed follow the leader at the
front of the experts group with returning visitor Paul Ayres coming under
increasing pressure from hard-charging Jon Courage for third spot as the
day went on.
Mark Bridgewater bounced back from a fearsome first race spill but
couldn’t muscle in on the front runners in the novice group where Martyn
Hardwill took a hat trick of race wins from Geoff Wiltshire and Leigh
Adlem.

HIGH FLIERS GUNNERED DOWN AT WINTERBOURNE
THE HIGHER they fly the harder they fall was
the maxim proved at Winterbourne Gunner on July 21st when a welter of
visitors and the uncompromising terrain shot down many of the regular
Hants and Dorset stars.
Interlopers made the Inter
85s their own with only Ryan Gower of the home challengers squeezing into
the top six after a bone-crunching crash sidelined Ashley Bailey.
The homegrown heroes fared
little better in the Inter 100s where Ross Copsey, Daniel Lynn and Jamies
Anstis renewed their regular rivalry in a three-way battle for the overall
third spot.
Luke Hawkins dominated the
Junior group with a verve and maturity beyond his years and the battle in
his wake centred on second spot with Mitchell Chalmers eventually getting
the better of Ross Keyworth.
In the absence of regular
runners gone to play elsehwere, returning prodigal Ashley Hawkins was left
to play piggy in the middle in a high-speed game of follow the leader at
the top of the expert plus ranks.
Ben Bowers returned to
Hants and Dorset to sweep the board in the Seniors where a second race
slip by Michael Bailey allowed visitor Danny Foreman and erstwhile home
favourite Craig Rogers to claim the minor placings.
Keiran Maidment bounced
back to top form to dislodge Lee Wrenn from the top of the Auto podium
with early season front runner Harry Hinson never far behind.
Victory in the first and
third encounters was enough for Mark Bridgewater to secure the overall
verdict in the novices from Adam Taylor and Leigh Adlem while club
stalwarts Steve Bain, Alan Parker and Chris Kimpton filled the rest of the
leader board.

MILLING AROUND AT
MILBORNE
REVERSAL of direction brought some reversal of
fortune among regular front
runners and the nearly men when Hants and
Dorset YMC returned to the
Milborne St Andrew slopes on August 18.
Lush grass early on, rugged ruts and dust as
the day wore on - and the track
wore out - caught out the unwary and unlucky
and the high rate of attrition
as the heat and bumps took their toll on men
and machines meant several
surprise, if well deserved, successes for those
who kept everything going in
the right direction.
Alan Parker whose form has improved by leaps
and bounds leaped into
contention among the Novices with two storming
rides and bound up his first
overall win by taking a debut race win in the
final heat after Adam Taylor
was sidelined with broken exhaust.
A second race fall by Inter Open hot shot Ross
Copsey allowed Marcus Feltham
to take the chequered flag en route to overall
runner up spot ahead of a
close scrap between Daniel Lynn, Dean Clark and
a fast-gating Neil Watton
for the final step of the podium.
Lewis Trickett bagged the first two Junior
races and Ben Weedon the third
but it was the consistency of three times
runner-up Mitchell Chalmers which
earned the overall laurels.
Things were even closer in the Autos where the
lap scorers could not
separate Keiron Maidment and Harry Hinson at
the line in the first heat
before the first named established his
customary dominance on the rest of
the day's proceedings.
Ben Bowers sailed to a clear cut hat trick in
the Seniors ranks where Danny
Nash pipped Joe Clark for the second spot.
Wayne Jacobs was the visitor who showed home
grown hero Thomas Speer the way
home each time in the
Inter 85s with Tony Cook making the rostrum in third.
Phil Lewis's superiority
in the Expert Plus meant he could give the rest of
the field a head start and
still come home in front with Mike Walbrin
enjoying a typically up
and down day to take second prize on a tie break
with Richard Skuse.

ROUGH UNREADY REMPSTONE
UNGRADED grains made for lumps and bumps when Hants & Dorset YMC switched
its scheduled Tincleton track on September 1st for the sandy ruts of a
Rempstone course still bearing the scars of April's muddy meeting there.
Stirring in a heavy curtain of black dust and a sweltering airless day to
the unremitting Rempstone roughness made for an unsavoury mix in groups
where too many cooks were battling to spoil the broth.
In the pressure cooker atmosphere of the Expert Plus encounters 'Factory'
Phil Lewis was the maitre de cuisine, but after another of his
self-imposed delayed starts he left himself too much to do to catch Lee
Lucas in the final heat.
A change of machinery saw Adam Taylor cooking on gas again at the head of
the queue in the Novice category where Mark Bridgewater and Leigh Adlem,
recovered from the bug that sidelined him a fortnight earlier, relegated
Alan Parker to fourth.
Michael Bailey was the cordon bleu among the Seniors where KTM pilots Joe
Clark and Lee Cummings added a dash of orange to spice up the proceedings.
Kurt Freeguard and Ross Hill, missing ingredients for much of the season
from the Inter Open and Inter 85 menus respectively, returned to the Hants
and Dorset fray to good effect leaving Ross Copsey and Ashley Bailey to
stew in their wakes.
Mitchell Chalmers was the toast of the Junior group after a grilling from
Ben Weedon who has turned up the heat considerably in the last few weeks.
Regular front runner Lewis Trickett suffered machine failure in one race
but went out later to win on an Auto borrowed from a younger competitor.
The micro-wave of Auto pilots were brought to the boil by Keiron Maidment
and with Harry Hinson and Lee Wren bubbling away behind him.

BISHOPSTONE
A GALAXY
of visiting stars threatened to eclipse regular Hants and Dorset hot shot
Phil Lewis in a battle of the Titans at the head of the Expert Plus field.
Paul Cowshall, at home on a track he helped his father Brian design, led
the way with three straight wins and although Phil had to play third
fiddle behind Daniel Lillington (twice) and Dean Woodford his greater
consistency earned him the overall runner up spot with another visitor,
James Richman, in third.
Another new broom sweeping all before him was Aaron Shirley one of nine
visitors in the Inter 85 group where Ross Hill clung on to overall second
despite a last race slip which allowed the chasing Chris Ayres to narrow
the gap to just two points.
The day's only other maximum was bagged by Keiron Maidment in the Autos
where Lee Wren and Harry Hinson traded places in his wake to maintain
their close rivalry.
After a first Junior race win Jake Shipton went missing to give Max Ansty
a clear run to the flag in the next two encounters en route to an overall
victory ahead of a resurgent Lewis Trickett while Mitchell Chalmers found
himself on the unaccustomed third step of the podium.
While DNFs dented the challenge of visitors Craig Rogers and Joe Stephens
who each won a race in the Seniors, home grown hero Michael Bailey had
already shown them the way home in the first leg on the way to another
overall victory.
Neil Watton snatched first race honours in the Inter 100s but normal
service was resumed thereafter as Ross Copsey won the next two heats to
securing the laurels from closest challenger Daniel Lynn.
Usual suspects Leigh Adlem, Mark Bridgewater and Adam Taylor finished in
that order after three fast and furious three-way scraps in the Novice
ranks.

RAIN REIGNS AGAIN AT BERE REGIS
WEATHER
gods didn't smile on Hants and Dorset - they laughed in their faces as
wind and rain turned Bere Regis into a muddy mockery for the third time
this season on unlucky October 13th.
The
stubble field which took the place of the regular Bere Regis track was
quickly turned into a paddy field and finally a morass where the rivulets
of water running through the ruts made faster progress than the
clag-clogged tyres vainly searching for grip.
Starting
lines, already decimated by the foul weather forecasts, were halved in
most groups for the day's second and final outings as the weather took its
toll on men and machines with the gallant marshals on occasion
outnumbering the riders on the track.
But muddy
meetings are an integral part of a moto-cross season and those who stayed
the course did their end of term points tallies no harm at all.
Ben
Milward ploughed his way to two expert plus wins while the never-say-die
Mike Walbrin made second overall following the demise of other more
fancied runners
and stalwarts Jimmy Hendry, Tim Chard and Lee Bailey showed their
grit to fill the remainder of the leaderboard.
It was a
similar tale among the novices where Leigh Adlem and Adam Taylor topped
the pile but other regular front runners went missing in the mire to let
some new names in to the results.
Seniors
also suffered a rapid rate of attrition with first race winner Ben Paine
and season-long supremo Ben Bowers among those falling by the way while
Michael Bailey, James Bartholomew and Joe Clark carried on regardless.
Max
Anstey was peerless in the junior ranks and the rest of the field was
powerless to stop Oliver Rusby achieving his finest hour with a brace of
second places.
Come rain
or shine the outcome of the Autos followed the same pattern with Keiron
Maidment leading home Lee Wren and Harry Hinson.
Thomas
Speer was also a double winner in the Inter 85 group where Rory Pickering
scored a personal best second overall and mini mud maestro Carl Miles
forced his way into the results at the expense of the usual big boys in
the group.
Visitor
Alex Snow's bike sounded as rough as the weather when he ground to a halt
while leading the first Inter Open heat but he made no mistake in the
second race to head overall winner Alex White across the line while Ross
Copsey slid to the third step of the podium behind the consistent Dean
Clark.
