QUICK MARCH AT MARTINSTOWN
MARCH, first meeting of the season at Martinstown, cold and wet, lots
of mud and most of the meagre entry still race rusty after the winter lay
off - NOT A BIT OF IT!
Gloriously sunny weather, capacity crowds in both adult classes and
riders of all ages revved up and ready to go for it, either where they
left off last year or making their mark in new and new-look groups.
Tim Chard displayed the unerring consistency which saw him crowned
expert plus champion in 2002 to earn the overall honours in the blue
riband group with two fifths and fourth place while visiting whizz kid Lee
Gillard's two race wins were negated by a no score in the second heat and
an uncustomary last race DNF knocked second race winner Pete Broomfield
out of the reckoning.
With last year's top dogs elevated to the expert plus kennel, Steve
Bain and Alan Parker looked set to dominate the novice group after the
first race, but after running in the engine he only rebuilt the previous
day, club secretary Paul Grubb rewrote the agenda with two storming rides
in the afternoon.
A seniors group bereft of stars who graduated from the class of '02
allowed last year's hardest trier Joe Clark to sweep all before him while
Lee Cummings, emerging from a somewhat fallow debut season, and Richard
Pile, building on his solid past results, scrapped for the next two
placings.
Among the junior schoolboy ranks Lee's little brother Dean also
returned to the pre-eminence of the season before last, going straight to
the top of the class with three gold stars. Jordan Murphy was lined up to be
his closest rival until a last race mishap let the unshakeable Chris Gunther get the silver star and there were lots of housepoints for Grant
Adlem, Clinton Townsend and Danny Wakefield.
For the first time the Autos were split into two concurrently run
classes with the intriguingly named Soul Ki-Aries besting Nathan Wakefield
and Alice Monks in the 50cc category and hat trick hero Oliver Jones
heading a trio of jumping Jacks in the 65cc bracket.
Carl Miles pounced on mistakes made by the faster starting Tony Cook to
seize the honours with Liam Perry, Ryan Carter and Sam Nicholls never far
astern in the Inter 85 group burgeoning despite the elevation and absence
of several regular runners from last year.
Jamie Anstis emerged from hibernation to hit the ground running in the
Inter 100 group with an untroubled maximum ahead of Marcus Feltham who
upped his pace after a sluggish first race to see off the challenge of
Buster Whetren and Neil Watton.

SOME FELL ON STONY GROUND AT STICKLAND
SUMER IZ A'Cumen in, as the old Darset folk
song goes - and so it was in the heart of the county at Winterbourne
Stickland when the second meeting of the HDYMC 2003 season took place in
glorious spring sunshine.
The only black cloud over
the day was the unabated hail of stones which pitted and punctured
following bikes and riders.
It may even have been an
errant stone that derailed the chain of Marcus Feltham's Kawasaki leaving
him to push home for a DNF in the final Inter 100 race when a hat trick of
victories seemed on the cards.
Instead the laurels fell
to Joshua House in a tie-break with last race winner Daniel Moyse while
third placed Alex White was only two points behind the leading pair.
There was no disputing
Tony Cook's dominance of the Inter 85 group where he kept well clear of
the chasing pack headed by returning prodigal Luke Wilkinson who pipped
Alex Hussey at the end of a day-long duel for runner-up spot.
Dean Cummings in the
Junior ranks also reeled off three straight wins to remain unbeaten so far
this season, while Jordan Murphy and Clinton Townsend each moved up one
place from their Martinstown scores.
No such change in the watercooled autos where the results were a carbon copy of the previous
meeting with Oliver Jones the ace card that trumped three Jacks.
And while Joe Clark was
again top dog in the Seniors he was led home in the first encounter by Lee
Cummings and last year's 100cc champion Ross Copsey on his delayed debut
in the quarter litre group also made his presence felt with two second
spots ahead of perennial third placed Danny Nash.
Among the big boys it was
Carl Warwick who ruled the roost after bouncing back from a poor first
race to snatch overall honours from Mike Walbrin with stalwart Pete
Broomfield third ahead of veteran Chris Adlem.
Martinstown stars Steve
Bain and Alan Parker renewed their rivalry in the Novice class but they
were totally eclipsed by Mark Williamson whose three race wins was the
only hint of consistency in a group characterised by the triumph of
exuberance over expertise.

MOTHERS PRIDE AT SUN-BLESSED MILBORNE
THREE dry meetings in
March - it may not be a record but it certainly is a drought as the
superficially greensward of Milborne St Andrew was turned into a dry and
dusty desert for Hants & Dorset YMC on March 30th.
Mothering Sunday was
more like smothering Sunday for the mums who marshalled in the swirling
sandstorm that clouded the increasingly rugged track - and it wasn't much
fun for any rider who failed to make the holeshot.
A seriously short start
straight upped the ante in the numbered peg lottery for gate positions and
the resulting dicing for advantage in the first few corners frequently
caused carnage among the bigger groups.
Training school coach
Ben Milward gave a master class in the expert plus division while Jonathan
Courage lived up to his name with a spirited challenge to keep pace with
the lanky young Wiltshireman while only a single point separated regular
runners Tim Chard and Mike Walbrin in the scrap for minor placings.
Lee Perks, Mark
Williams and Alan Parker each won a race in the novices with the
hard-charging Lee securing overall victory ahead of Alan and a first race
no-score consigning Mark to obscurity while Steve Carter's hopes of making
the frame ended in a race-long tangle with the plastic netting.
With Lee Cummings on
sick leave, GI Joe Clark easily overcame the opposition in his march to
victory in the minor desert storm of the seniors where his rivals were
quickly left crying in the wilderness of a sparse and spread out group.
In contrast, the baby
boomers of the Inters - both 100s and 85s - ensured close racing all the
way down the field with double race victor Neil Watton taking the larger
laurels from first heat winner Alex White and Tony Cook's first race
falter allowing Alex Hussey to take the chequered flag en route to the top
step of the podium.
Dean Cummings
maintained his unbeaten record in the junior league ahead of Jordan Murphy
and Lee Wren and Oliver Jones remains equally peerless among the
water-cooled autos. But a new name appeared at the top of the air-cooled
autos with George Pool heading home Daniel Howting and Alice Monks.

ROCKS, HOLES BISHOPSTONE
IN THE absence of
forecast April showers, only the rocks rained down from clouds of dust for
Hants and Dorset's first Bishopstone bash of the season.
Caution exercised by
the organisers in sending out Steve Bain as pacemaker for the first lap of
practice quickly evaporated into unbridled enthusiasm for the ample air
time offered by the Bishopstone bumps.
And the like the
mythological monsters of old these man-made Sirens lured several unwary
sailors to a painful downfall on the rock strewn slopes.
Showing a contemptuous
ease born of his extreme familiarity with the track resident Bishopstone
hotshot Paul Cowshall sailed serenely and spectacularly to an untroubled
triple triumph in the Expert plus group and when his dust had settled the
greater consistency of regular runners Mike Walbrin and Tim Chard gave
them the verdict over others who were faster but failed to stay the
course.
Steve Groome's
investment in go faster goodies over the winter paid off with a debut
novice race win and despite having to borrow a bike for the second
encounter he compiled two second spots to secure a clear overall victory
from Alan Parker and the aforementioned pace-setting Steve Bain.
Joe Clark maintained
his unbroken dominance of the Seniors group bolstered the emergence of
several late starters to the Hants & Dorset season. Ashley Smith emerged
from the dust to snatch second by the narrowest of margins from visitor
Sean Locke.
The water and air
mixture of Autos boiled down to clear wins for Oliver Jones and Daniel
Howting in their respective wet and dry cooled categories although in the
latter Soul Ki Aries took a win on his way to runner-up spot ahead of
leading little lady Alice Monks.
Lewis Trickett left
his Junior rivals to eat dust while biting the dust in the first race cost
nearest challenger Dean Cummings a top six place. Instead it was left to
Lee Wren to claim the second place perch from Jordan Murphy.
Tony Cook revelled in
the conditions to set a blistering pace which none could match in the
Inter 85 ranks where only two points separated the next three placings and
only a tie-break split Carl Miles and Ryan Carter.
Neil Watton bounced
back from a first race spill but could not catch overall winner Lewis Hall
who was the most consistent of the front runners on a day of thrills and
spills.

SLICK SLIDING AWAY
DAMP grass - two words
absent from the Hants and Dorset vocabulary so far this year - set the
tone for the Martinstown meeting on April 29 and gave a new look to the
leaderboard in most groups.
While the two
hedge-hopping jumps allowed the bravado boys to show off their aerial
antics, the slick surface and tight corners required more precision than
panache and a gentle touch on brake and throttle to avoid the
embarrassment of a sudden about face.
Seniors had the
pleasure of breaking the ground - and the mould - as Danny Nash ended Joe
Clark's unbeaten run with three straight wins while the KTM campaigner
could only manage a second place in his one finish. Keith Martin's high
hopes evaporated along with the fuel in his Kawasaki but Ross Copsey and
Dean Hillier had enough in their tanks to complete the podium places.
Oliver Jones stayed
ahead of the Jack pack in the water-cooled autos but visitor Connor
Jocelyn showed a clean pair of wheels to the home club heroes in the
air-cooled category.
Juniors unleashed a
spray of fizzing orange at the head of each race with Dean Cummings the
corker that kept fellow KTM campaigners Jordan Murphy and Lee Wren bottled
up behind him.
Ross Keyworth
gambolled to three straight wins as the joker who trumped the regular aces
in a reshuffled Inter 85 pack with Carl Miles the best of the rest in a
group that is as highly competitive as it is populated.
After winning the
first Inter 100 race and taking second next time out, Robert Hartley
looked to be in a jam with a third race eighth but the spread of results
still gave him the overall spoils on a tie-break with Marcus Feltham.
Another group with a
new name at the top was the Expert Plus where double race winner Jamie
Chapman and ultra consistent Chris Adlem made hay while the usual front
runners slithered out of contention.
Even a first corner
crash couldn't prevent Stephen Bain racing to the overall win in the
Novices, but it did allow Colin Ayles to claim a race win en route to
third place behind Alan Parker.

Mid Sussex hosted, for the first time, the
Hants and Dorset, Stevenage and Mid Sussex club challenge at the weekend.
The wind and rain on Friday night put a few of the riders off but the
lovely weather Saturday and Sunday dried the track well giving 2 good days
racing.
Hants and Dorset put on a
good performance despite the reduced number of riders gaining a total
score of 2087. At the end of Saturday Stevenage was ahead of Mid Sussex
by 40 points but Mid Sussex fought back on the Sunday to take the overall
win with 2761 points against Stevenage’s 2722.
The committee and members
of Mid Sussex would like to thank all the riders that took part to make
this an enjoyable weekend and we are looking forward to visiting Hants and
Dorset next year.
In the Auto group there
was a good start for Stevenage with Harry Bradley taking the win in all 3
races but he left at the end of the first day due to bike problems and on
the second day the wins went to Steven Robinson, Harry Loseby and Sam
Lindsay, which gave Harry Loseby the overall win. Lloyd Pettet and Toby
Harkness had 3 wins each in the Novice Junior group but consistent riding
from Toby gave him the overall win by 9 points. In the main Junior group,
Jack Rowe took all three wins and Joe Walklett all but one of the seconds,
which went to Daryl Maxwell. Daniel Goodwin had three comfortable wins in
the SW 85 group with Charlie Hughes, Lewis Gillett and Owen Brigdewater
spreading out second place between them. In the 100’s group the wins went
to Chris Bastick and Bradley Clements with Chris taking 4 of them to gain
the overall win. The youth 125 group was a small but very fast group
with the battle on between the top five, Nathan Braithwaite, Sean
Barnsdale, Sean Young, Harry Boxell and Joe Clark who all rode well to
give probably the most exciting racing of the weekend. The Adult B group
was dominated by Roger Melling with Ashley Cox in second on the first day,
on the second day Tony Verbeeton and Steven Bain pulled out the stops to
take the seconds between them. On day 1 the Adult A group was dominated
by Pete Gomm but on the second a couple of good starts from Tony Priestly
left Pete unable to get past and he had to settle for second. Consistent
riding from Kestor Gibbons resulted in 5 thirds and a DNF to give him
third overall.

TRIGON TRIGGERS RIGOR MORTIS
TRIGON doesn't kill you -
it just feels that way as testified by the litany of broken bones, aches
and pains and stiffness and strains suffered by all ages and abilities
after Hants & Dorset YMC made its first visit in more than a year to the
blasted heath between Wareham and Bere Regis.
Any illusions that the
track, slightly modified in places, had had all its lumps and bumps graded
out were quickly shattered by the end of practice when the unforgiving
terrain was soon taking no prisoners and exacting a terrible toll on bikes
and riders.
Joe Clarke's KTM came back
in bits from the first seniors race and Inter 100s Henry Rowe (collar
bone) and Darren Savage (wrist) were early casualties in the race for the
crash of the year trophy.
Surviving the seemingly
inevitable carnage of the start straight and first corner was the first
step to success and failure to do so robbed several regular runners of
their accustomed leaderboard slots.
But when the going gets
tough the tough really got going and Jon Courage lived up to his name with
a seemingly untroubled maximum in the Expert Plus category where a trio of
thirds elevated a rejuvenated Phil Whetren to second overall ahead of
young guns Carl Warwick and Michael Bailey.
Steve Bain also reeled off
three straight wins in the Novice category with Mark Honeybun relegating
regular runner-up to third ahead of a rapidly-improving Lee Freemantle
revelling in the rough conditions.
At the other end of the
age scale Oliver Jones was his usual peerless self while Jaylee Arnold and
Tyler Hoare shuffled themselves among the pack of Jacks that made up the
winning handful of water-cooled autos. Soul Ki-Aries, though, profited
from the third race DNF of Carl Noble to snatch air-cooled honours.
Dean Cummings maintained
his stranglehold over the Junior ranks while big brother Lee on his
welcome return to racing eased to a sixth place in the seniors group won
for the second time in a row by Danny Nash.
Ashley Bailey with two
firsts and a second outplaced Aaron Carmichael's two seconds and a first
to top the Inter 85s pack while a last race win gave Lewis Hall the
verdict over Neil Watton and Marcus Feltham in the hotly-contested 100s
group experiencing more than its share of ups and downs.

FLYING LOW OVER HENSTRIDGE
THREE steeply-sloping man made jumps in a field
that would have been flat had it not been ploughed beneath the
lush-covering of seat high grass made aviators of all but the most nervous
of the huge Hants and Dorset YMC field of almost 250 riders who converged
on the Henstridge airfield on the border of Dorset and Somerset.
The easy nature of the course and the going
made softer by overnight rain and intermittent squalls during the day
meant no one required the services of the air ambulance hovering next door
although one expert plus rider was lucky to walk away after half the group
appeared to have ridden over him.
Upgraded from seniors, Joe Clarke made an
immediate impact on the blue riband expert plus group but there was none
to match the orange streak that was Jonathan Courage who took all three
races with consummate ease.
In the absence of early-season pace setter Joe
and with Dean Cummings still to return to peak fitness and form, Danny
Nash made hay in the seniors group enlarged by a number of upgradings and
several visitors including second race winner and overall runner-up Nick
Phillips.
Visitors also inflated the ranks of the
air-cooled autos and breezed off with the lions's share of the spoils with
third overall for new member Ben Harrison the best of the home club
scores.
But at the other end of the age spectrum there
no room for visitors on the fully-subscribed Novice start line where Steve
Bain bested Alan Parker in the latest round of their season-long duel.
There was a full grid too in the juniors which
has also become a largely-two horse race with Jordan Murphy, at last,
getting the better of arch-rival Dean Cummings and Jamie Mole burrowing
his way into the results to unseat regular podium sitter Lee Wren from his
perch.
Tony Cook took first blood in the 85s but then
had to settle for two thirds as Ross Keyworth called the tune with Oliver
Rusby and Carl Miles taking turns to play second fiddle.
The number 1 plate on Lewis Palmer's bike was
well-placed as he scorched to three wins in the Inter 100s class with new
- or is that renewed? - member Ross Hill following him home each time out.
Three Jacks in the box could catch out Oliver
Jones who also reeled off his customary maximum in the water-cooled autos
division.

THUNDER & LIGHTNING AT MILBORNE ST ANDREW
THERE was thunder in the air and lightning
on the track when a deluge of Hants and Dorset regulars and a sprinkling
of visitors poured into Milborne St Andrew for Hants and Dorset YMC
championship meeting on June 22nd.
The overnight and early morning rain did
nothing to dampen the dust, but did serve to make slippery what little
grass remained on the periphery of the steep and rugged slopes of the
bumpy, battle-scarred track.
In a bizarre natural phenomenon, the rain
was replaced by a cloud of insects which swarmed over anyone and anything
yellow, but there were no flies on wily veteran Chris Adlem who kept first
race winner and overall victor Phil Lewis at bay throughout the second
expert plus heat.
Alan Parker seized the initiative in the
novice ranks with two race wins - the third going to the wildly
fluctuating Paul Curtis – while regular front runner Stephen Bain found
himself in unaccustomed fifth behind old campaigner Colin Ayles and
new-found hot shot Dave Lopez.
Kurt Freegard made his visit to Hants and
Dorset memorable with a clean sweep of the seniors category at the expense
of home grown hero Danny Nash and Inter 85 interloper Jamie Smith also
lorded it over the local lads led by Tony Cook.
Nothing was quite so clear cut in the Inter
100s where three thirds was enough to clinch the overall verdict for
Marcus Feltham in a tie-break with double race winner Lewis Palmer with
third placed Thomas Speer just four points further adrift.
Normal order was restored among the Juniors
with Dean Cummings regaining top spot from Jordan Murphy in the day’s
biggest group.
Oliver Jones once more held the whip hand in
the watercooled autos but Tyler Hoare was the joker who split a shuffled
jack pack for the minor placings.
And there was a new name at the top of the
aircooled autos with Ben Harrison getting the better of Carl Noble.
